Mouth of the Ebro river
Rivers, lagoons, beaches and dunes with vegetation and salt marshes… The mouth of the river comprises different natural environments that you can observe with a panoramic view from the Zigurat viewpoint. You can also observe different types of birds including ducks, herons, gulls, terns, shorebirds and cormorants. In the area of the mouth of the river there are three natural protected areas of great importance: El Garxal, the island of Sant Antoni and the island of Buda.
El Garxal
A series of small islands and lagoons shaped by the wind and the sea and surrounded by diverse ecosystems of dunes, reedbeds and salt marshes. El Garxal hosts a rich and varied flora and fauna, such as a great variety of water birds which you will be able to see from the two viewpoints, one of them adapted for visitors with reduced mobility.
Passeig del Riu
From the viewpoint Molí dels Mirons you can enjoy a magnificent view of the Ebro River and the island of Gràcia. Its location is at the entrance of the village in Jesús i Maria. It is the starting point of the cycle path that follows the riverside walk until the end of the village, with a total of 6 km, passing through emblematic points of Deltebre, such as the bridge Lo Passador. This bridge connects both regions of Baix Ebre and Montsià since 2010 in an infrastructure that invites to observe the river from a different perspective: above the same.
Muntell de les Verges
This 4-metre-high dune was the highest point of the Ebro Delta for a long time. It is located in the right bank of the river, very close to the river’s mouth. Its panoramic view allows you to see the islands of Buda and Sant Antoni. Crowning the dune there is a monument dedicated to the all the Virgins related with the journey of the Ebro River from its source in Cantabria, with Montesclaros Virgin, to its mouth in the Ebro Delta, with l’Assumpció Virgin.
Punta del Fangar
This is the only desert in Catalonia and it is a natural area of great value. It is a peninsula that goes into the sea to the north mouth of the Ebro River. It stands out for the beauty of its different natural environments. 410 ha of mobile and fixed dunes, sandy areas, beaches and bay. It is an important refuge, feeding and nesting area for migratory water birds, such as terns and gulls, and in addition there are shellfish beds in the inner part of the bay. On very sunny days, the site has a special character thanks to the mirages that can be seen together with the vastness and beauty of the place.
Canal Vell lagoon
It is the biggest lagoon on the left side of the Delta. Lots of different types of birds nest here, including ducks, common moorhen, herons, birds of prey and flamingos.
Illa de Mar wetland
This purification system was created between 2010 and 2012 as part of bays quality-improvement programme in the Ebro Delta. The wetland is formed by shallow lagoons where plants of humid areas inhabit. Wetlands function as passive systems of water treatment where the clean-up process is produced naturally thanks to the action of sediments, plants and microorganisms. These natural purification systems are an example of green infrastructure.
